As of 31 July 2026, the country had already reached 300.5 GW, which is more than 60% of the target. Solar power alone has grown from 2.8 GW in 2014 to 164.59 GW. A recent study by CEEW and NRDC India says the clean energy goals could create more than 44 lakh full-time jobs by 2030.

Chhattisgarh, long known for its coal and power plants, is also changing. At Anjaneya University in Raipur, you can study B.Tech in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Electronics and Telecommunication or VLSI Design. The university also hosts conferences and talks on sustainable development, so campus conversations already include a cleaner future.

What Are India’s Renewable Energy Targets?

If you are looking for the best engineering courses after 12th, it helps to know where the country’s energy is headed. It also promised net zero emissions by 2070. A GW, or gigawatt, is a very large unit of power, and 1 GW can light up lakhs of homes.

How far has India come?

As of 31 July 2026, India’s non-fossil capacity stood at 300.50 GW, which is over 60% of the 500 GW goal. That is more than 54% of the country’s total installed capacity of around 552 GW. India first crossed the 50% mark in June 2025, five years ahead of its Paris Agreement promise, and that is something to feel proud about.

Which sources lead the way?

Solar leads by far, followed by wind and hydropower. Let us look at the facts, the good and the difficult, so you can decide with an open mind.

How quickly is India adding new capacity?

In 2025-26, India added a record 55.29 GW of non-fossil capacity, including 44.6 GW of solar and 6 GW of wind. The year before, it added 29.5 GW. Rooftop solar is growing too, with 14.8 GW installed under the PM Surya Ghar scheme since February 2024.

India is also making its own solar equipment. Listed solar module capacity has reached 215.5 GW, while cell capacity is only 31.76 GW. That gap means engineers still have a lot of work ahead to build cells and improve factories.

Is all of this clean power actually being used?

Not yet fully, and it is fair to be honest about it. In 2025, even though over half of India’s installed capacity was renewable, around 70% of electricity generated still came from fossil fuel and nuclear sources. This is because the sun and wind don’t run around the clock, and the grid has to keep up.

Think of it like building a huge water tank before laying enough pipes. Reports say the grid is expanding more slowly than new solar and wind plants, so some clean power gets wasted. Better wires, batteries and smart controls are needed, and that is exactly where young engineers come in.

What does this mean for your career?

It means the challenges are also the opportunities. Every hurdle, whether it is storage, grid planning or manufacturing, needs trained people to solve it. That can make you feel excited, not worried.

How Many Jobs Will the Clean Energy Shift Create?

Not every good job requires a long degree, and that’s comforting to know. Even a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering course can lead you into this field. Let us see what the numbers say.

What do the studies estimate?

The CEEW and NRDC India study (2026) says the 500 GW goal and the National Green Hydrogen Mission could create more than 44 lakh full-time equivalent jobs by 2030. It names rooftop solar as the biggest job source. Other estimates differ, with some saying over 3 million renewable energy jobs by 2030, so treat them as guides, not promises.

What kind of skills are needed?

The study says nearly 60% of deployment jobs need highly skilled or semi-skilled workers, and that rises to 80-90% in manufacturing. That means companies want trained people, not just hands to help. Women made up only 11% of the workforce in solar and wind, so more young women can join and lead.

What about green hydrogen?

India is aiming for 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen a year by 2030. The Skill Council for Green Jobs says this could create around 6 lakh jobs.
